Abu Garcia Black Max Review

The Abu Garcia Black Max is the baby or introductory offering in Abu's Max line of baitcaster reels.

The other models are the Silver Max and the Pro Max with both models adding a step up in terms of casting performance and drag quality.

It is also available as part of a combo, this combo is probably one of the best baitcaster combos available for those looking to get a low cost baitcaster setup that still has all the quality and reliability you would expect from a brand like Abu Garcia

Abu Garcia Black Max Review

The Black Max reel is aimed at beginners or those on a budget. It offers a low cost option for those looking to dip there toes into the world of baitcasting reels.

Despite this it is more than capable for an intermediate angler and if you are anything like me you may like to keep a cheaper spare setup in your truck as a back up or just for a quick cast after work with a handful of lures.

Although you can use it in saltwater providing you rinse it thoroughly after every use I would normally going for a higher end reel that would have better seals and corrosion resistant materials.

Abu Garcia Black Max

The Black Max is built from a lightweight graphite frame and body. It weighs in at just under 8 ounces.

A reel built from graphite will generally be light, but that lightness will come at the expense of structural rigidity of the reel casing.

If you were to try and use this reel on very heavy gear for large saltwater fish then that lack of a stronger frame would become apparent.

However, that is not the intended use for the Black Max as it is a light to medium rated baitcaster.

For casting medium sized lures for bass in freshwater it is more than competent.

The spool is made from machines aluminum and for a reel at this price free-spools quite smoothly.

Casting is quite good thanks to it's magnetic brake system and is especially forgiving even for a beginner.

It has a fairly low profile design so you need to be careful that the rod you pair it with does not have a high rod grip that may cause some line rubbing during casting.

Specifications
  • Lightweight graphite frame and body
  • 6.4:1 gear ratio
  • Machined aluminum spool
  • MagTrax brake system
  • Power disk drag
  • 1 year limited warranty
What rod to use with the Black Max?

Firstly if you are new to fishing then you need to understand that there are spinning rods and casting rods.

As the names imply a spinning rod should be matched to a spinning reel and a casting rod should be matched to a baitcasting reel.

It is best to pair the Black Max with a medium power rod in a 6'6" or 7' length with a fast action.

Abu Garcia Black Max Line Capacity

The line capacity for the Abu Garcia Black max is:

  • 145 yards of 12 lb monofilament fishing line
  • 130 yards of 30 braided fishing line

This is more than enough line for most freshwater baitcasting setups.

Best line for Abu Garcia Black Max

As good a reel as the Black Max is if you pair it with the wrong line then you may have created a recipe for disaster.

What line to put on the Black Max?

If you are a beginner then I would recommend 12 or 15 pound monofilament. For a more advanced user then then 30 lb braid.

Monofilament is cheap and if this is your first baitcaster then you may well end up with lots of birdnests that need to be cut off of the spool. Buying a high quality large spool of mono will not break the bank.

It is also a little bit more forgiving than braid on a baitcaster as it we not bed into the previous layers when wound in too title.

Braid fishing line however is a little trickier to get right but given it's stronger rating for the same diameter you can use it for a lot more types of fishing.

Given the choice between 12 lb mono and 30 lb braid when fishing beside deep cover or thick weed beds for bass I would choose the braid every time.

KastKing are producing some of the best baitcaster rod and reels for the money and are slowly but surely eating into the market share of more established brands.

KastKing Stealth Baitcasting Reel Review

The KastKing Stealth reel is a high performance carbon baitcasting reel that is incredibly lightweight (it only weighs 6 ounces!) and it gives anglers an incredible experience.

The reel includes carbon side places, frame, and a handle with flat-paddle EVA grips. The reel also features carbon fiber drag system, which anglers can appreciate, especially since the reel also features a CNC machined and lightened spool so it will spin with very little (if any) effort.

Features

Notable features of the KastKing Stealth Baitcasting Reel include:

  • Carbon fiber handle
  • Braided line ready ceramic line guide insert
  • Sure grip EVA knobs
  • 7 magnet brake system
  • 11 anti-corrosion shielded ball bearings
  • Right and left hand models available
  • 1 year warranty

The carbon baitcaster is so lightweight because the designers created this beautiful piece from aerospace-grade aluminum micro mesh gear.

This system is going to give you versatile high speed gear ratio of 7.0:1, which can make a world of difference when you’re trying to reel in the big catch of the day.

The reel has a spool capacity of 165 yards of 12 pound test line that is finished in a black matte carbon black and has golden highlights. The Stealth reel are 100% resistant to corrosion and they are great options for anglers who enjoy saltwater fishing.

Anglers will appreciate being able to cast further distances with this reel because the line just seems to fly out of the reel with ease. This ease comes from the 11 anti-corrosion shielded ball bearing system.

This one-way clutch system is able to give you super quick hook sets each and every time, but it also delivers a smooth performance that tournament anglers and the casual angler can both appreciate.

What Others Say

When we looked at the user reviews, we saw that most had great things to say about the KastKing Stealth Baitcasting Reel and left amazing reviews.

Of these reviews, people commented on how lightweight and fast it was. Several people thought that they would lose casting distance with this particular unit, but they were pleasantly surprised by the fact that it was able to outcast their old spinning reels.

Many anglers who purchased this reel felt like they are able to cast further and reel it in much smoother than with previous reels that they have tried. One customer even said that it is a “Cadillac” of reels.

Folks who fish in saltwater the majority of the time really appreciate the fact that the reel is anti-corrosive, so they can use the reel and trust that the integrity won’t be compromised due to the salt air.

The most common complaint customers had was that the reel became rusted, even though it claims to be anti-corrosive and able to be used in salt water.

Customers expressed their displeasure over the instructions that came with their reel, as it was in Chinese and there weren’t any English instructions.

Customers said that the weight and the knobs were perfect, but they ended up wasting so much line because it would birdnest badly with the “brakes at max and the tension knob” was as tight as it would go.

One customer said because of how badly the reel birdsnest, they had to re-spool the reel after each time they would use it.

Experienced anglers who have purchased this reel were disappointed because they had to continuously pick out backlash. They would set the magnetic brake tighter, but this fix stopped working after a few casts.

Our Recommendation

As far as bait casting reels go, the KastKing Steal Baitcasting reel proves to be a top-notch reel at a very affordable price.

This is going to be the perfect reel for those who enjoy a variety of fishing styles, be it flipping, pitching, punching, or using Alabama rigs. With this reel, you’ll be able to cast much further than before because the line is going to fly!

When you pair the 16.5 drag system with the 4 carbon disks and the hardened aluminum washers, you’re going to have incredible drag power.
